Each month, Pope Francis shares an “urgent” prayer request with the world about a current need in society. This month, he’s asking everyone to pray
This month, he’s asking everyone to pray for him. What’s going on? He and some of his closest advisors are on a 6-day retreat March 5-10.
Pope Francis’ Urgent Prayer Intention for March 2017:
The official prayer intention as shared by the Apostleship of Prayer:
For the Pope: “I ask, please, for your prayers for me and my collaborators, who until Friday (3/10) will be on retreat.” -Pope Francis
Or, if you prefer tweets:
I ask, please, for your prayers for me and my collaborators, who until Friday will be on retreat.

Leading and running the Church is quite the job, and this retreat is a chance for all involved to find some spiritual refreshment and inspiration for their work ahead. Let’s pray hard for them all month, and especially during the retreat this week.
[Learn More: It Takes TWO YEARS to Write Papal Prayer Intentions?]
The classic way to pray for the Pope’s intentions is to offer up a “trinity” of prayers: an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be. Each month, we rummage about to find prayers the apply to the current intentions. You’ll find those below:
- Prayer for the Pope’s Retreat (Couldn’t’ find one for this, so we wrote our own.)
- Prayer for the Pope 1
- Prayer for the Pope 2
- Prayer for the Pope 3
Praying is the best and most effective way to bring about supernatural change in the world. If you’d like to get your hands dirty with other actions in addition to prayer, here are some things you might like to try:
- Offer a fast or perform a voluntary mortification for the Pope’s retreat.
- Invite others to join you in praying for the Pope’s retreat.
Prayer for the Pope’s Retreat [back to prayer list]
Holy Lord, God of Hosts,
Creator of all that is holy,
Who give us every good gift:
Look beyond my sins,
And hear my prayer:
Watch over and protect
Your son, my brother,
Francis, who serves
both you and the world
as Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church.
Bless him, and those with whom he works
as they retreat from their daily tasks
and enter into a time set apart
to grow closer to you.
come down upon them,
renew and refresh them.
Drive away from them
every spirit that is not of your Spirit.
May they be re-invigorated
and inspired by a renewed commitment
to live their lives entirely for you.
I humbly offer this prayer
and offer my guardian angel
to join the host of angels
defending, guarding, and leading them
by the light of your truth
both during this retreat
and as they return to Rome
and begin again the good work of governing your Church.
We ask all these things
in Jesus’ name and by his blood.
Prayer for the Pope 1 [back to prayer list]
O Lord, we are the millions of believers
humbly kneeling at Thy feet and begging Thee
to preserve, defend and save the Sovereign Pontiff for many years.
He is the Father of the great fellowship of souls and our Father as well.
On this day, as on every other day, he is praying for us also,
and is offering unto Thee with holy fervor the sacred Victim of love and peace.
Wherefore, O Lord, turn Thyself toward us with eyes of pity;
for we are now, as it were, forgetful of ourselves,
and are praying above all for him.
Do Thou unite our prayers with his
and receive them into the bosom of Thine infinite mercy,
as a sweet savor of active and fruitful charity,
whereby the children are united in the Church to their Father.
All that he asks of Thee this day,
we too ask it of Thee in union with him.
Whether he weeps or rejoices,
whether he hopes or offers himself
as a victim of charity for his people,
we desire to be united with him;
nay more, we desire that the cry of our hearts
should be made one with his.
Of Thy great mercy grant, O Lord,
that not one of us may be far from his mind and his heart
in the hour that he prays
and offers unto Thee the Sacrifice of Thy blessed Son.
At the moment when our venerable High Priest,
holding in His hands the very Body of Jesus Christ,
shall say to the people over the Chalice of benediction these words:
“The peace of the Lord be with you always,”
grant, O Lord, that Thy sweet peace may come down
upon our hearts and upon all the nations with new and manifest power.
Prayer for the Pope 2 [back to prayer list]
be pleased to bless and protect our Holy Father,
whom you have chosen as the successor of St. Peter
as the chief minister of unity and charity in the Church.
Keep him safe in holiness of life
and in wise fulfillment of his awesome responsibilities.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Prayer for the Pope 3 [back to prayer list]
Let us pray for Francis, the Pope.
May the Lord preserve him,
give him a long life,
make him blessed upon the earth,
and may the Lord not hand him over to the power of his enemies.
May your hand be upon your holy servant.
And upon your son whom you have anointed.
Let us pray:
O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful,
look down, in your mercy, upon your servant, Francis,
whom you have appointed to preside over your Church;
and grant, we beseech you,
that both by word and example,
he may edify all those under his charge;
so that, with the flock entrusted to him,
he may arrive at length unto life everlasting.
Through Christ our Lord.
